Passion for Mythology and some background on this project
Currently, this project is something near and dear to me: mythology. Mythology is a subject that I have been obsessed with for as long as I can remember. My ultimate goal is to produce images for every pantheon, exploring lesser known deities, and bring them all to the modern era. From there, I plan to make a compendium, a book, full of these images that detail who these gods are.
So why is this my passion project? As I grew older, I realized that people only saw these gods in antiquated ways--like they were unrelatable and difficult to understand. Relics, if you will. Combine that with my obsession with the Norse Gods, a pantheon that most of us were denied the privilege of learning when we learned about the Egyptian, Greek, and Roman gods, this project was born. It initially started with the desire to maintain traditional clothing, but I realized quickly that that was going to become an expensive and difficult project, and definitely one that would not be realistic for me to get off the ground. Then it occurred to me: why show these gods in the way that people used to think of them? Why not show them how they could be if they were gods of today? What if they were people, just like us, walking around Kansas City?
Right now, I'm mostly focused on the Norse Pantheon, as its the one I'm most familiar with and can really help guide my participants on, but I am open to starting any other pantheon, should anyone be ready to help with it!
What you should know or expect when working on this project:
Something I am really striving for on these projects is uniqueness and individuality. The last thing I want is for these pictures not to convey who they're supposed to be, and not hold true to the mythos of these gods. While participants do not have to be models in any way, comfort in front of the camera and the ability to take direction well is a necessity. This is also a HUGE project and I've come to terms that it might take a hot minute to complete. After all, I started this project in June of 2018. But I need to have the right people along for this journey.
What Im looking for with participants:
A willingness to do research
I will happily point you in the right direction, but I truly want you to embody these characters. Think of it as both a modeling and acting opportunity. You transforming into these characters means I'll be able to use your images in my final product, and research is the key. Even a quick google search will usually do it, and if its a toughie to find things on, odds are I probably have the info for you.
A creative drive
Im looking for people who are willing to take these characters, embrace who they are and truly be creative with it--show off their own flare. This isn't something I want to ask anyone to spend money on. If theres something I desperately feel in my bones that that shoot has to have, I will buy it. Otherwise, its up to you. I'll be happy with anything in your closet, as long as you're able to bring this character to life. Seriously, I will sit with you as you put outfits together and give you my thoughts (sending me pictures of these outfits is totally a thing too). I will help you put things together. And you're totally allowed to go and buy something to complete this character in your mind--its all up to you! Obviously, Im more than happy to collaborate with you on this; I just want you to have the freedom to interpret and bring these characters to life in yourownunique way.
A willingness to take creative license
With a lot of this project, I'm vague on purpose. Theres only certain characters I will voice my opinions on and ask be done certain ways (such as Hodr wearing all white). But realistically, I want to see your interpretation of these characters. My thoughts can be biased. Take the Lofn session, for instance. I had a completely different look in my mind but I wanted to see what the model for her would do--if she would interpret Lofn the same way I did. What she came up with was really thought out and even better than anything I would have realistically put together for her. I want the participants in this project to be able to look on their contribution to this and be proud of the work they did to bring their unique character to life--and not just produce another pretty picture.
With many of these gods, we have a specific window of time within the year that we can complete their shoot as they correspond specifically with the seasons. I need participants who are dedicated to what they're helping to accomplish and wont cancel/postpone their shoot date. I understand that emergencies happen, that life happens, or that sometimes the weather just doesn't cooperate. I'm not unreasonable and will totally work with you. However, if rescheduling does need to happen, please understand that if we miss the shoot window season wise, then that reschedule may be months away. Also know that, if you are representing a god that has anything to do with water, rain, or snow, that you will be out in that weather if that weather were to occur during our shoot date (unless unsafe to do so). If you cancel or postpone your session without a set reschedule, I will assume that you no longer want to be a part of the project and move on. Typically I'll wait a few weeks to hear back from those who have to postpone, especially during emergency situations, but it is the participants responsibility to reschedule their session.
What our Participants recieve:
A free photography session! While the pictures may be for a specific project, these pictures are still of you. All of the edits from your session will be provided to you, free of charge, for your personal use or modelling portfolio/social media. You will be able to download all the edits and have reasonable use of them (i.e. just dont re-edit them, alter them, or sell them, etc). This is a trade value of $150 or more, depending on how long we shoot for plus how many images we produce--cause you're getting all the good and great final images.
A discount on the final book product, should you desire a copy.
An awesome photographer friend who will totally hype you up, build your confidence, inflate your ego, and give you advance notice on any sweet deals that I plan on running. Plus, if you're a model, you'll be among our list of first pick models any time we want to test something out or if we have another project in mind (which means more shoots that you wont have to pay for)
How to apply to work on this project:
As this is my passion project, I want to try and find the best fits. That doesn't always mean you'll get the god you may have come in wanting. For instance, if you're someone who wants to be Thor, unless you're red headed with a big beard and the like 2 or 3 other things Im looking for specifically for such a big character, odds are you'll end up with someone you better represent physically, if not on a personality level.
Send us a message!!! Either click the contact us button at the top OR go to our facebook or instagram and shoot us a dm there!
Let me know you're interested in being part of this project (specify which pantheon if not Norse).
We will chat for a minute while I see who you draw my eye to the most for you to be.
I will send you a list of at least 2 names that I think you might work best for. From here, a little bit of light research may be required for you to narrow down who you think you would be the best at being.
Once you have decided, we will narrow down a shoot date. If I already have a location in mind, we will narrow down location and time too. Typically Im not sure of these 2 things until the week of, and will touch base with you then if that is the case.
During this time, you do your research, ask me any questions and build your character. Should you need to reschedule your shoot because you've gone down the rabbit hole of perfectionism, let me know and we will figure it out. All I ask is you keep me up to date and feel free to reach out to bounce ideas off of me.
We shoot! Sessions are typically around 1 to 2 hours long, so that you have time to get comfortable and we can try out any and all ideas, switch locations, or even outfits if you so desire. I set these up without any true time constraints so that we are more worried about getting the pictures than we are watching the clock. I want you to have fun with your session, so the less pressure there is for either of us, the better!
Pictures are delivered to you within a month, month and a half, depending on the intensity of the edits I'll be making to your images and how much paid work I also have at the time.
